Spirulina is a genus of cyanobacteria, formerly known as "blue-green algae". Spirulina occurs naturally in tropical and subtropical fresh water, but today it comes almost exclusively from farms in southern and Asian regions. China, Taiwan or Hawaii.
Spirulina is also used in fish farming. As a nutrient-rich addition to fish feed, especially in fish farming. It is also used in the field of livestock, small animals and rodents and some cat food. What is healthy for masters or mistresses is also healthy for animals in smaller portions. Most house cats nowadays lack important vital substances such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, selenium, calcium and phosphorus, because many types of cat food only contain and supply these artificially or not at all. Various diseases usually follow from these deficiency symptoms.
In 1974, Spirulina was named "Best Food of the Future" by the World Health Organization.
The natural, holistic and versatile composition and excellent bioavailability of spirulina make the algae more and more economically interesting for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to being used as a dietary supplement, spirulina is added to various foods, such as baked goods. In cosmetics, Spirulina serves as a supplier of vital substances, especially the wide range of amino acids is very much appreciated in skin care.
Another application is found in biotechnology and biotechnology, where spirulina is used, among other things, as a biocatalyst in fermentation processes and for energy generation.
